"All Our People Are Here"

Next to Molly, holding her nervous sweaty hand in his, stands Chris, the love of her life. “All our people are here” she says. Chris wiggles a "surf's up" hand and sticks his tongue WAY out. 

Caught up in the moment, Molly won't know until later that I captured this on camera. And in 20 years, that photo will still remind her how it felt standing between the beginning of her life and the rest of it.

That’s why I love this work. The feeling of witnessing people and families come together is exhilarating.

But you know what's NOT exhilarating? My origin story. Here it is: I bought a camera and started using it, and 15 years later people SOMEHOW want to give me money to make photos for them. God I'm lucky.

The lights are low in the waiting area. Behind Molly, her besties giggle as they choreograph their feral entrance dances.

In front of her, the pleasant din of family and friends all laughing together for the first and probably only time filters through the heavy door.
