Andrew and Karen
If you scroll through these pictures, you’re going to see some things that you don’t typically see at a wedding: an original Nintendo Entertainment System, a cake-topper modeled after Ash from the Evil Dead series, and some sort of wooden, strappable owl-companion. Not pictured are tables numbered with kind-of-nerdy movies and a surprising number of reception-goers chugging Smirnoff Ice. What strikes me, though, is that despite the obvious quirkiness and winky kitsch, these ornaments are not merely an ironic gesture. Andrew and Karen included this stuff in their wedding because it excited them and because it is a symbol of meaningful bonds and experiences. I applaud them for eschewing some traditional wedding ornamentation in favor of wacky stuff that proclaims “We are weird, we are in love, and you can be weird and in love right here with us.”
